Dark Angel

Liam and Gala

“Boy of 15, he knows everything, he dances with pain, he sees through the night, dark angel you know, you’re gonna grow old, you died for love, you’ll give in to the world, keep the secret, you gave in to the world, keep the secret, you died for love, keep the secret when you’re gonna grow old, keep the secret, dark angel you know”

Yesterday as I walked outside Output (a club in Brooklyn) a man stops me and says: “Gala?”
I looked at him but I couldn’t understand who he was or where we had met before. Then he said: “It’s me, Liam!”
I looked in his eyes and I had a strange  feeling, I saw on his face, ( the face of a grown man)  the same eyes of a little 13 years old kid  whom I once met on a small island in Italy….

It was Liam!
I was 18 years old and I was hanging with my friends from Brazil, Argentina and Italy, in the island of Filicudi, and we saw this beautiful kid. Everyone said he looked like he could be my little brother, and since I never had a little brother, I ” adopted” him for the whole summer …He loved to hang with us, even if he was so much younger and we loved to have him with us.

I actually had a crush on him, I must admit…even if it was a platonic crush of course…:-) he still remembered today how I took him to the  club on the island, and made him dance in the center of the dance floor with me!

I still can’t believe he recognized me after almost 20 years! The photo I shot of him has always been so special to me, it represented innocence and beauty; I had printed that photo manually and spent hours in the dark room in NY.

I entitled it: WOODEN WINGS  because in the photo it looks as if he is an angel and he has wooden wings (the chair where he was sitting created the shape of two thin wings behind his shoulders). Liam was also an angel in reality, when you talked to him, he was a very clever, curious and beautiful kid.

I don’t know him now, I didn’t have a chance to speak with him for too long, but appearances (even if they have changed) don’t change my memory. To me he remains that kid and that soul I met on an island …

Some of you might remember my song “BOY OF 15” it wasn’t dedicated only to him, but he certainly was one of the inspirations.

“Boy of 15, he knows everything, he dances with pain, he sees through the night, dark angel you know, you’re gonna grow old, you died for love, you’ll give in to the world, keep the secret….”
